Malaga Island, a fascinating 42-acre island a stone’s throw from Sebasco village, is part of the Maine Freedom Trail, a network of places important to the African diaspora and Black history. The island is tucked into a channel between Bear Island and Phippsburg’s mainland, and can only be reached by boats, including kayaks and canoes.
This is a delightful, albeit small (2-acre) Phippsburg Land Trust preserve, with a 0.2-mile trail that includes a couple of swings, a picturesque bench, and some craggy rocks by the shore that make for fun exploration for children, and for beautiful views of a quiet harbor for adults. This is a short, pleasant walk for people who want a breath of fresh air and some good views. Noble Hill is protected by the Phippsburg Land Trust. This has got to be one of the most beautiful areas in midcoast Maine, if not all of Maine. The 600-acre preserve is popular, and its large parking lot quickly fills up on weekends and on beautiful summer days. So arrive early or late on glorious Saturdays and Sundays! If you live in Phippsburg, you have the right to park at Totman Cove, which includes a popular sandy beach. Non-residents can park on Sebasco Road and walk in from the trail system for Robinson’s Rock and Merritt Mountain, which is a really nice way to travel! The walk up to Robinson’s Rock is short
A 0.4-mile public walking trail through this Phippsburg Land Trust easement leads to the Kennebec River and a small salt marsh along the bank. The remainder of the easement is private and not open to public access. The access road to the preserve, on Atwood Lane, follows a narrow, rather rough lane. The trailhead kiosk is
