{"id":8096,"date":"2016-05-30T12:43:05","date_gmt":"2016-05-30T12:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainebyfoot.com\/?p=8096"},"modified":"2016-05-30T12:43:05","modified_gmt":"2016-05-30T12:43:05","slug":"kennebunk-plains-kennebunk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.mainebyfoot.com\/index.php\/2016\/05\/30\/kennebunk-plains-kennebunk\/","title":{"rendered":"Kennebunk Plains"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=13hvllQaSSRh2exRTibJ7hlrEqTI&#038;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This map shows both the <strong>Kennebunk plains (blue)<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mainebyfoot.com\/wells-barren-preserve-wells\/\">Wells Barren<\/a> (orange).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcm.org\/forest-wildlife\/land-for-maines-future-conservation\/kennebunk-plains\/\">phenomenal area<\/a> \u2014 a grasslands and pine barrens, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/ourinitiatives\/regions\/northamerica\/unitedstates\/maine\/placesweprotect\/kennebunk-plains.xml\">protected by The Nature Conservancy<\/a>, the state, and other organizations \u2014 which is home to several rare or endangered species. In late summer, the fields bloom with the world&#8217;s largest population of a purple flower called northern blazing star \u2014 the only place in Maine where this happens. The area is huge and a number of dirt roads and paths crisscrossing it. A couple paths head down to the Mousam River or little fishing areas. Most of the walking is flat and open \u2014 so you&#8217;re very exposed to the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the two trail systems in Wells and Kennebunk are close, it is not easy to walk from one area to the other (along the power lines corridor) because of a bisecting stream that divides them. I&#8217;ve seen evidence that some walk or snowshoe along the power lines during the winter, when it is easier to cross the stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong> From downtown Kennebunk, take Route 99 northwest; parking is available at the property on the right and on the left.
