The woods open up near the river; it&#8217;s very pretty. The preserve includes more than 2,000 feet of shoreline footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 500 feet after leaving the parking area, you can turn right to follow the blue-blazed, 0.4-mile Woodland Trail through pine and hemlocks to a view of the cove. Or you can continue along straight, to do the 0.6-mile Headlands Trail, which I found to be the more scenic of the two loops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Georges River Land Trust describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgesriver.org\/weskeag-headlands\">this parcel<\/a> as having distinct estuarine intertidal habitat. The shallow coves that you see at the headland will allow the marsh to migrate inland as the sea level rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The preserve is across the river from more conserved land and another trail system, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mainebyfoot.com\/weskeag-preserve-south-thomaston\/\">Weskeag Preserve<\/a>, and is part of 1,562 conserved acres in the Weskeag River and St. George River estuarine ecosystem.<br \/><strong><br \/>Directions:<\/strong> From Westbrook Street, turn down the narrow Hopkins Drive, which can be a touch bumpy.
