They share a large parking lot. The 195-acre <a href=\"https:\/\/yorklandtrust.org\/explore\/smelt-brook-preserve\/\">Smelt Brook Preserve<\/a> lies along the salt salt marsh to the west (south) of Cider Hill Road, while the 90-acre <a href=\"https:\/\/yorklandtrust.org\/explore\/highland-farm-preserve\/\">Highland Farm<\/a> is to the east of the road (or north, depending on how your head is tilted).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you can go for a long walk combining the two, walking from sweet water to salt water, as one hiker put it. Plus, Highland Farm Preserve connects to the vast trail network around the <a href=\"http:\/\/kitterywater.org\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Wshed-Brochure-2013-new-map.pdf\">Kittery Water District<\/a> (via Kingsbury Lane at the northern end of the preserve).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you head over to Smelt Brook Preserve, it is about 0.5 miles to the marsh. The 1.3 miles of trails on this side are more consistently easy, if you&#8217;re looking for an easygoing stroll. They bring you through a mature forest of shagbark hickory and oak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trails in the Highland Farm Preserve start out gently in a large, beautiful field before entering the woods and becoming rockier and rootier. I particularly loved the high Ridge Trail in this preserve, which looks down on Boulter Pond. The old cemeteries are also interesting to visit. Additionally, there is a very short wheelchair-accessible trail that juts out into the meadow at the start of the Highland Farm trail system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions: <\/strong>From the junction of Routes 1 and 91 in York, follow Route 91 north three miles to the preserves&#8217; entrance on the right. Both preserves share a large parking area, at 321 Cider Hill Road. You have to cross a busy street to access Smelt Brook Preserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-tiled-gallery aligncenter is-style-rectangular\"><div class=\"\"><div
