Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Georges River Land Trust and the state have protected an additional 1,000 acres in this area, &#8220;resulting in nearly complete protection of the marsh.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the trailhead on Buttermilk Lake, you can head off in either direction, eventually walking down to the edge of the wetland. It can be buggy in the summer, so be prepared. As we made our way around the meadow, we were enveloped in a sweet perfume from the grasses and flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visitor to Maine By Foot (and the preserve!) describes her recent walk: &#8220;It&#8217;s pretty small, but I found it very rewarding when I walked it yesterday \u2014 the hayfield was full of wildflowers, and the field ended at a little winding tributary to the Weskeag that felt forgotten and far away.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions: <\/strong>From Route 1, drive down Buttermilk Lane for just about two miles.
