From the main manicured park area, where there&#8217;s a paved path and benches, you can venture farther afield by following a rougher path for about a half mile up river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or head the other direction and cross the historic footbridge. The Two Cent pedestrian bridge was constructed in 1902 (after the first one washed away) to \u201cprovide [mill] workers with easy access to both sides of the river&#8230;The bridge stands as the last surviving toll footbridge in America.\u201d I believe that the fee to cross was two cents! Nowadays it is the place for people to secure their love with little padlocks. On the other side of the river, you can follow a short paved path up a hill to Two Cent Bridge Park, a little Winslow park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panels explain that human activity in this area likely began with the Canibas tribe of the Abenaki, who established the community of Taconnet Falls here (later Ticonic Falls), a vital trading center until its destruction by the British in 1692. Taconnet is an Abekanki word meaning \u201ca place to cross,\u201d and the settlement here was the second largest one in Maine at the time of the first European visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The village was located on the eastern shore, and the Canibas burial ground was on the western side of the river, roughly between today&#8217;s Temple Street and the Hathaway Mill complex. Three other big Abenaki communities flourished along the Kennebec River before the Europeans arrived \u2014 where Richmond, Augusta, and Madison are today. The name Kennebec comes from the Abenaki word <em>Kinipek<\/em>, referring to quiet river waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late 19th century, the city says that this site \u201ctransformed into an industrial hub, housing water-powered mills and the Waterville Iron Works.\u201d French Canadians arrived to work in the mills, followed by a wave of Lebanese immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions: <\/strong> The park&#8217;s access road is off Front Street, directly opposite Temple Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-tiled-gallery aligncenter is-style-rectangular\"><div class=\"\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__gallery\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__row\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__col\" style=\"flex-basis:36.02821%\"><figure class=\"tiled-gallery__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-height=\"1067\" data-id=\"15608\" data-link=\"https:\/\/mainebyfoot.com\/head-of-falls-waterville\/headoftide1\/\"
